About
Plain-English extended car warranty guides, written by someone who's read the contracts.
AutoWarrantyAdvice is an independent reader-supported publication covering vehicle service contracts (VSCs), manufacturer-backed extended warranties, dealer add-ons, and third-party administrator plans. We don't sell warranties. We don't take commissions on warranty sales. We just read the contracts so you don't have to.
Our mission
Every year, millions of US drivers are offered an extended warranty — at the F&I desk after buying a car, in a glossy mailer, or from a call center that somehow has their VIN. The pitch is almost always rushed, the contract is almost never read, and the buyer almost never gets a second opinion before signing a four-figure commitment.
AutoWarrantyAdvice exists to close that gap. We publish step-by-step guides built from the same contracts, state insurance filings, and claim documents that determine whether your repair gets paid. Every guide is written to do one thing: let you slow the process down and make the call on your own timeline.
What we cover
- Warranty Basics — what a VSC actually is, the difference between powertrain, bumper-to-bumper, stated-component and exclusionary coverage.
- Reading Contracts — the exclusions, maintenance clauses, betterment language, and dispute-resolution terms that decide claims.
- Comparing Providers — manufacturer plans, dealer plans, and third-party administrators side by side.
- Filing Claims — how claims are paid, why they get denied, and what an appeal actually looks like.
- Costs & Pricing — typical price ranges, dealer markup, deductibles, and whether to roll the warranty into your loan.
- Buying Tips — when coverage genuinely pays off, scripts for the F&I desk, and how to time a third-party quote.
Editorial standards
Every article on this site follows the same internal checklist before it goes live:
- The author has read the relevant contract language, not just a marketing brochure.
- Claim and complaint patterns are cross-checked against the BBB, state attorney general filings, and consumer affairs records where available.
- Prices, deductibles, and provider details are dated; if they change, the article is updated and the "last updated" date moves.
- No provider, dealer, or administrator gets to review content before publication.
- If we recommend against something, we say so plainly — even if the company in question runs ads on the page.
Full details live in our editorial policy and fact-checking policy.
How we make money
AutoWarrantyAdvice is funded by display advertising (primarily Google AdSense) and, occasionally, affiliate links to unrelated consumer products we've personally tested. We do not sell warranties, do not earn referral fees from warranty providers, and do not let advertisers influence which providers we cover or how we cover them. See our disclaimer for the full disclosure.
Who writes the guides
Every article is written and edited by a named human — primarily Marcus Hale, profiled below. We use AI tools the way most modern newsrooms do: for spell-checking, summarising long PDFs, and reformatting tables. Drafting, judgment calls, recommendations, and contract analysis are done by a person.
Editor & Lead Writer

Marcus Hale
Independent writer covering extended car warranties
Marcus Hale spent eleven years on the service drive at independent and franchise repair shops before moving into consumer writing. He has read the fine print on hundreds of extended warranty contracts — manufacturer-backed, dealer-sold, and third-party — and translates the jargon into something a normal car owner can actually use. He is not affiliated with any warranty provider, dealer group, or insurer, and he does not sell warranties. Every guide on this site is based on contracts he has reviewed personally, public state regulator filings, and conversations with claims adjusters.
Before launching AutoWarrantyAdvice, Marcus spent eleven years on the service drive — first as a technician's apprentice at an independent European-car shop in the Midwest, then as a service advisor at a multi-brand franchise dealership, where he sat in on hundreds of warranty claim calls with manufacturer reps and third-party administrators. That's where the idea for this site started: too many customers were learning what their contract actually said only after a repair was denied.
He writes from that practical, behind-the-counter perspective — not from a call center, not from a press release, and not from a vendor's affiliate dashboard.
